About the Game
Charge & Spark Game Overview
In Charge & Spark, you and your opponent will try to reduce each other’s health to 0 or be the first to reach the goal (moon) space in the center of the board. Since there are two potential objectives, you must consider your opponent’s position and work to counter their dominant strategy—they might slip right past you if you aren’t careful! Below is a general overview of the game. More detailed rules can be found in the rulebook.
Game Setup:
Setup the game as depicted above—each player should receive the 6 basic cards as well as 4 data tokens, 4 battery tokens, and 4 health tokens. All of the health tokens and 2 of the battery tokens should be face up, while the remaining 2 battery tokens and all of the data tokens should be placed face down. The upgrade cards should go into a shuffled pile next to the board in the center. Also place each player’s robot on their respective starting square on the center board.
Flow of the Game:
In this game, players select a card to play for the turn and reveal them simultaneously. Certain cards have effects that cancel each other (Barrier reducing damage taken (shown above), Trap or dealing damage preventing Move, Counter reflecting damage, etc.), so it is important to consider what resources your opponent has at their disposal on any given turn. After paying the associated cost (if applicable) and resolving the card effects for the turn, place the used cards into each player’s recharge area. If there is a card already in the recharge area at this time, it returns to each player’s hand. By looking at the card in your opponent’s recharge area, you will have a better idea of what they might do next.
Upgrades and the End of the Game:
When players move forward towards the goal space, they are able to draw from the upgrade deck in the middle of the board, permanently adding a strong card to their rotation. The game proceeds as above until one player’s health tokens run out or one player reaches the goal space in the middle of the center board.
