About the Game

White Runner Game Overview

The once-in-a-century cross country skiing race "White Runner" is on! Between the swift rabbit, clever fox, mighty bear, and athletic deer, who will prove to be the ultimate cross country skier? Your goal is to finish the race first by managing your speed and stamina, rolling dice in order to advance through the rugged forest terrain. Below is a brief overview of the game. More detailed rules can be found in the rulebook.

Game Setup:
Each player chooses one of the four animals, receives their skiing cards, and sets up their animal board.

A and B tiles are placed randomly on the board, forming the White Runner skiing course. Because of the random placement, different spaces will cost more or less to traverse each game, providing a different course each time!

Game Flow:
Each round is divided into two sequential phases:

  1. Skating Style Phase

  2. Skiing Phase

During the Skating Style Phase, players select one of their four skating style cards to play. The cards will dictate the player order, the amount of available dice, and the possible movement spaces for the next phase. They also modify the players' speed, potentially granting them more dice to use throughout the game.

In the Skiing Phase, players go in order dictated by the stamina cost of their skating style cards. Depending on the card played, players will roll a certain amount of dice to earn their movement points. These movement points are spent to proceed in the race, fulfilling the requirements of each movement space ahead. However, players may only move as many spaces as their played skating style card allows.

Being in the lead isn't always beneficial though - jumping over other players counts as one move, so you can advance multiple spaces with just one move!

Advanced Rules:
In the advanced rules, players will be able to make use of unique abilities themed around each character! The fox can consume an acorn (a power-up item obtainable during the race) to always move first during the round, getting the jump on everyone. The rabbit can consume acorns to ramp up their speed and increase the number of dice they have access to. The bear is able to use an acorn to power through to the next space before rolling any of their dice, making it easier to get past spaces with challenging terrain. The deer plays more technically, allowing the player to consume an acorn to reroll any number of dice - this ability is risky, but when used skillfully can help meet the conditions for moving onto certain spaces.

Strategically manage your stamina, speed, dice pool, and race placement to conquer the snowy mountain and be the first to cross the finish line!
